State Cheer

By Jessa Howard

Football CheerThe Abilene High School Cheer Squad goes to Topeka every year to compete in a State competition. Last year, because of Covid-19, they didn’t have the opportunity to travel to Topeka. Instead, they sent in a video of their performance virtually. Then the team Zoomed in to find out their results. In 2019 they placed fifth and last year they earned Runner-Up.

The cheer squad had practices every Monday in October and November, then two weeks leading up to the competition they prcaticed 3 times a week. It takes time to perfect their routine and become competitive with other teams in the state. The judges focus on motions, spirit, and overall presentation. The cheer squad has been focusing on these requirements at each practice over the past few weeks.

Senior Amelia Arevalo, captain for the basketball squad, speaks on what the cheer squad has been working on to succeed at state, “We have been working on our motions, the way we are presenting it to the judges, and getting it all setup to get a win.”

This year on November 19th they will be traveling to Topeka. The night before the competition, they will stay in a hotel together and do some team bonding. Then, they will then perform their state performance the next day.

Sophomore Ava Crist, a member of the basketball squad, tells us what she’s most excited for when going to state, “I’m excited to bond with teammates, [that] I don’t [normally] cheer with and I’m excited to take state and take it home.”

The cheer squad hopes to take state on the November 20th, so lets cheer our cowgirls on to success!
